I am going to disagree with everyone here and say that I think the guard did great, based on his training and experience. His martial arts training is targeted mostly for ring fighting and his experience is in that area. Not many people have the additional perspective of taking a martial art and applying it to an actual situation. The guard had to make that adjustment quickly and on the fly. I commend him for that.

Ring fighting is limited in its application in the field. Martial arts in general are performed and practiced digitally, in that the focus tends to be on if/then statements (if your opponent does this, then you do this). Actual combat is analog with people doing things that are more chaotic and less predictable than can be trained for specifically. I think that with just a few lessons from Mr. Grannon you would see that guard turn into a real fighting machine!
